Drunken Salarymen: The Musical [07 Jan 2010|12:24am] mushroom18 [ mood | contemplative ] [ music | *u* ] Right now I'm working on a final paper about Japanese salarymen as featured in pre-World War II films. It's scary how things haven't changed -- they still work to death, drink to death, and remain obedient to their bosses even if they're being treated like worm. Majority of the men in Japan, however, are expected to take this way of life. It's such a natural path that every male college student is pressured to apply in companies. Most of my male Japanese friends already wear business suits, scurrying around for interviews for potential employers. It's strange because the suit is such a formal attire, but even normal employees wear them. THEY'RE FUCKING EVERYWHERE. I'm always pressed against one in the rush hour train -- it's so jampacked in the mornings that my face is practically on some salaryman's chest, while Matthew swore it was so tight that he was already 'prodding' a salaryman in the ass. He even accidentally pressed his mouth against a salaryman's head when we were being jostled/pushed around. We joke that "it's the closest to action these guys can get" in loud english, fully aware that they most likely understand what we're saying but are too scared/preoccupied to say anything. One of the advantages of being a gaijin is that we can speak normally on the train. The salarymen just keep eerily quiet, which is strange because everybody's glued to the crotch and no one even breathes. Whenever I go to an izakaya (Japanese pub) it is normal to see a group of crazy Japanese salarymen, fully red in the face and shouting at the top of their lungs. What's even normal is that these drunkards GET in the train. Every night the Yamanote sen has this distinct odor of booze. I can't count how many times I've seen a) vomit on the train platform b) someone vomiting IN THE TRAIN c) drunken salarymen walking awkwardly/falling asleep in weird positions d) people drinking beer from cans. All these while taking the train. Another possibly disgusting/fascinating anecdote: my friends and I were heading off to Jiyugaoka for some karaoke when we spotted a group of completely smashed salarymen near the station. They were about sixty years old. Two balding, red-faced men were giggling and holding hands tightly, and when we walked by the other said "君愛してる." ("I love you") over and over again and started kissing the other man's neck. THESE WERE LIKE OLD MEN HAVING THIS TEENAGE NECKING SESSION. I stared at them in sheer horror and fascination as my friends pulled me away. Next thing we knew there were two other men, swaying drunkenly, holding hands and giggling like schoolgirls, whispering sweet nothings. 2010 [02 Jan 2010|07:02am] mushroom18 [ music | Wrong Number - Tohoshinki ] I am extremely exhausted and too lazy to focus on other things i.e. cleaning my room. TONS of things happened in such a short span of time -- we had the Meiji Gakuin Christmas Party, Christmas Eve at the dorm, I went to see Angela Aki live, my sis kotomine visited and I took her to all my favourite places + Kamakura since I haven't been there (it was awesome btw) and we walked a lot, tinkered with gashapons, did purikura twice, and ate loads. My sis asked me "why do you guys eat a lot" because I would help myself to tons of servings while she wouldn't even finish hers, which might explain my epic weight gain. So now I'm full/happy/tired/worried about upcoming schoolwork. I'm not going to explain my year 2009 experiences because it would take up a long list. Basically it could be summarized as this: I CAME TO JAPAN. :D During New Year's Eve my sis and I went to Kamakura to visit the temples then went drinking at an izakaya in Jiyugaoka. Finally we ended the night with karaoke. At night before I slept I had this whole walk down memory lane -- about how I got here, all the people I'm with, etc. and then I started thinking about what I'm going to do when I come back home; I know I'm welcome but there's this fear that may be I wouldn't fit in anymore? Among other things. It's crazy because I'm leaving soon and I miss home so badly but I am so USED to living in Tokyo that this is my home too. It's a really weird feeling, half melancholy and half fulfillment. 4 will fight to Save Me
